A Portrait of Me

A Portrait of Me

Galeria de la Raza, San Francisco
Plastalina, metal, plastic, vinyl

As a Chinese American woman, I’ve often felt my identity was tied to how others perceived my physical form and the social and cultural history that created those perceptions. In this installation, I quoted what people said to me over the years about being an Asian woman and contrasted that with my response; a series of impermanent figurines titled, “Let’s See How You Like It”.

Each clay figurine combined historical and contemporary representations of women transposed onto the Chinese male. Animator’s clay was the media of choice.
